yup…dead again

its confirmed – western digital gave me a crappy arse refrubished harddrive. wonder which part of paying my respects to the i.t god did i screw up at.

i gave up, surfed jobs’ website and ordered myself a new 24″ iMac. now, if only appleCenter can make haste with my order and send me the damn machine already.

in the meantime, i am discovering that feisty fawn on a thinkpad x31 rocks and gimp, krita or cinepaint is nowhere near replacing photoshop anytime soon. also, amarok beats itunes hands down without even trying.

anyone wants a p4 3.0HT | 2gb ram | ati x1650 pro for cheap?

yet another hardware failure

its only been about 4 months that my current main machine (backup one was linux and i need photoshop / lightroom to do my photos) was built, it died again! i came back from a wedding shoot, all sticky and tired, to a blank screen with the words “disk error”. stabbed the power button and popped the casing open to what I initially thought was an oven – hard disk felt like a damn bbq grill ready to burn some meat.

i left the machine as it is and succumbed to fatigue on the bed.

i woke up the next morning to the dread of confirming if the system is really dead (job hazard of being a techie). i muttered a prayer and switched on the box – to my surprise it fired up normally. got to windows and found numerous i/o errors on event viewer starting from noon the day before. it took a good minute before i realised that i haven’t backed up any of my photographs stored in there! what followed next was data relocating frenzy involving 150 gigabytes of data with a truckload of DVDs. the average period that the hard disk would co-operate was about 3 hours, before it goes back to being dead. took about 6 power-off coll down sessions before i manged to get all the data backed up.

its gonna be two weeks before i need to submit them wedding photographs to the newlyweds. i’ve raised an rma with western digital and i just hope they do not give me a crappy arse refurbished drive.

i just hope that my current streak of hardware suicides ends soon….i don’t want to have to get a mac (i need the money for school!)
